National Certified Investigator and Inspector Training (NCIT) Practice Test

Data minimization in digital investigations means collecting only information strictly necessary to answer the investigative questions and achieve the investigation’s goals. This keeps the scope focused, reduces exposure to sensitive data, and makes analysis more efficient and reliable. In practice, it involves clearly defining the purpose, determining what data is truly needed, selecting only relevant data sources and time frames, and documenting the justification for each data item. After collection, apply retention limits and access controls to prevent unnecessary handling of data. The other options miss the point: collecting everything expands the scope beyond necessity and raises privacy and legal risks; discarding all data would erase evidence or hinder investigation; and avoiding digital tools would prevent accessing the digital information that investigations rely on.
